Asian American courses offered to current Fuller students, alumni, and cross-enrollees

How do we allow the gospel to permeate and transform every aspect of who we are? Students at the Asian American Center at Fuller Seminary (AAC) are equipped with a contextualized gospel that enables them to lead as an Asian American or in Asian American contexts. Students learn to integrate biblical truth deeply with the Asian American experience, identity, and community.

This includes a rich understanding of the complex needs and leadership potential of East/Southeast/South Asian Americans, the particular experiences of multiethnic folks and adoptees navigating ethnic-specific and pan-Asian American contexts, and more.

Asian American Ministry Concentration

Our concentration prepares students to lead in vocational settings including ethnic-specific or multiracial churches, nonprofit work, multicultural or Asian American parachurch ministries, and the arts. This concentration will equip such students with a sophisticated practical understanding of racial history, cultural engagement, and contextual theology. Sample courses include Asian American Identity and Ministry, Church as Family System, and Asian American Theologies.

Programs: Master of Divinity (MDiv), MA in Theology and Ministry (MATM)

Asian American Identity & Ministry (TM528) - This course, designed for both Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans, teaches practical theology methods for the task of constructing local theologies in Asian American contexts.

Asian American Pastoral Ministry (PM506) - The course attends to themes, topics, and paradigms that provide pastoral leaders capacities to think theologically about pressing issues in their respective Asian American congregations, organizations, and contexts.

Asian American Theologies (ST544) - This course serves as a deepening of academic discussions around the theological diversity of Asian American Christian thought.

Fall 2026 Asian American Ministry Cohort

Pastoral leadership in the Asian American church involves understanding how our congregations are distinct and how those nuances can impact the way we think about and do ministry. God encounters our communities in their concrete particularities, which means that God sees and cares deeply about our unique pains, longings, and hopes as Asian American churches.

This Doctor of Ministry cohort aims to form and equip pastors in leading Asian American churches in holistic witness to the gospel of Christ in their contexts. Combining interdisciplinary scholarship with practical experience, this cohort provides research-based academic resources, spiritual enrichment, and ministerial competencies to support the thriving of Asian American pastoral leaders and their congregations.

Campus Life and Fellowship

Asian American Center, in partnership with the Asian American Student Fellowship (AASF), holds events and hosts speakers for our students both in Pasadena and online throughout the year—including a welcome banquet, guest lectures, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, and a graduation banquet. These events, as well as other AASF social gatherings, offer natural points of connection and community for Asian American students, leading many to become friends and study partners and even lifelong ministry collaborators.
